Shavesha’s Story

Shavesha was born in Jamaica and spent much of her childhood moving from one place to another. At 15, she entered the foster care system in Peel, facing a series of challenges, including sudden relocations from two foster homes and a friend’s house. These frequent disruptions left her feeling unsettled, searching for a sense of stability and belonging.

Shavesha aged out of the foster care system at the required age of 18. Despite this hardship, she was determined to carve out a future for herself by pursuing higher education. She enrolled in York University to study sociology, eager to build a strong foundation for her future. However, without supportive connections or financial security, she continued to face housing instability and found herself moving between shared accommodations. The loneliness and challenges of her transition out of foster care and into university weighed heavily on her. It was during this time that she was referred to StepStones by a community organization with whom she was involved.

“From my very first day, I was immediately taken by the warmth, kindness, and resourcefulness of the organization.”

From the moment she connected with StepStones, Shavesha felt a sense of relief. Even though her initial meetings with her one-to-one Connections Coordinator were virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their bond grew, and she soon began attending in-person events. Seeking to build a strong support system, Shavesha was interested in StepStones’ Building Connections Program. Through this, she identified her core circle of support and the key relationships that shaped her journey. Mobility Mapping helped her visualize the many positive connections she had throughout her life. With guidance from her Connections Coordinator, she began strengthening existing bonds and bridging new connections with people from her past, creating a more stable and supportive foundation for her future. She immersed herself in the StepStones community, finding joy at events such as the Annual Summer BBQ, Holiday Youth Party, weekly Tuesday night dinners, and various workshops.

Through StepStones’ housing grant program, she was able to secure stable living accommodations. This reduced an overwhelming financial burden and increased housing stability, allowing her to focus on her studies and personal growth. She also took full advantage of StepStones’ skill-building workshops and career development resources, not only as a participant but as a volunteer. Eager to gain experience and build her resume, Shavesha actively contributed to workshops and events, helping to facilitate sessions. As she prepared for her job search, her Connections Coordinator provided guidance on crafting her resume and identifying career pathways. As part of the mentorship initiative, she was paired with a one-to-one volunteer mentor who became an integral part of her journey. Their connection, built on trust and mutual support, flourished through shared experiences—from board game cafes to the Holiday Market in Toronto—creating cherished memories that strengthened her sense of belonging.

One of the most defining moments of her journey with StepStones was her university graduation in 2023, where her Connections Coordinator was right by her side, celebrating her incredible achievement. For us at StepStones, nothing compares to the joy of seeing a young person in our program achieve their goals. For Shavesha, it was a reminder that her Connections Coordinator was more than just a support worker—she was a friend, a trusted ally, and someone invested in her success. In May 2024, she gave a heartfelt speech at our Crafting Change event, sharing her journey and inspiring others. These experiences not only helped her develop essential life skills but also allowed her to forge friendships and create a meaningful support network.

“They also made my birthday particularly special by taking me out for a meal at a delightful restaurant and teaching me how to roller skate, something I have always wanted to do but missed out on during childhood.”

Shavesha is a remarkable and inspiring individual with boundless potential and a relentless drive that pushes her forward in her journey, building a future that she envisions. She is a role model for other youth in our program and we cannot wait to see what she accomplishes in the years to come. Thank you, Shavesha, for having us be a part of your journey – one full of opportunities, love and unwavering support.

“Please know that the organization you are supporting is a great one, and it is changing the lives of vulnerable youth daily. Thank you again for your continued support!”
